How To Get Rid Of Dark Circles Under Your Eyes
Theres nothing inherently wrong with having dark undereye circles. But because they can signal certain health conditions and unhealthy lifestyle factors, its important to make sure you see your doctor regularly and maintain a healthy lifestyle to get at the root of your undereye bag problem.
Dark circles or undereye bags due to aging are usually not reversible, says Zoumalan. However, there are treatments available which are solely about aesthetics and dont serve a medical purpose. There is no one-size-fits all solution for managing the appearance of dark circles and under-eye bags, says Zoumalan. Each person is different and requires customized solutions to treat the area, so theres a plethora of ways you can conceal or treat dark undereye circles and bags, from cosmetics to surgery.
Skincare can be a good start, Goldstein says. The easiest treatment is to conceal the dark circles using optical diffusers with minerals such as nitride, mica, silica, silicone powder, talc, titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, she says. These compounds can help lighten up your visage and hide the circles. Using creams containing peptides of retinoids, or chemical peels, can also improve collagen and decrease melanin production, which can also help plump up the lower eyelids.
For more severe cases of bags caused by undereye hollowing, injectable fillers using hyaluronic acid products can quickly even out the fatty pads in the under-eye area, Goldstein says.
Ways To Get Rid Of Eye Bags
There are different approaches to reducing under-eye puffiness, depending on the cause. At-home treatments can temporarily shrink lower lids that are sometimes swollen from fluid pooling in the undereye area. But, says Desai, home remedies and over-the-counter products can only do so much, To effectively get rid of under-eye bags that are prominent and permanent, medical treatment is oftentimes necessary.
Dealing With Thinning Hair And Hair Loss
Hair loss from hypothyroidism is usually not a big problem, Dr. Pearce says. It should stop with thyroid treatment, although this could take several months.
Pearce adds that hypothyroidism might not be the culprit when it comes to hair loss or thinning there could be an unrelated genetic cause. Or the problem might be certain medications, stress, iron loss, or simply aging.
Hypothyroidism treatment wont help hair thats thinning for other reasons. But if thyroid issues are to blame, try these solutions:

The eye changes associated with thyroid disease are referred to as Thyroid Eye Disease . Your doctor may also use the term Thyroid Associated Orbitopathy . Although TED is seen in all types of thyroid disorders, it is most common in patients that are or were hyperthyroid. It also rarely occurs in those who are hypothyroid and even when there is an absence of thyroid abnormalities in the body.
Thyroid disease can cause multiple eye problems. These include redness and swelling, double vision, decreased vision, eyelid retraction , and a bulging of the eye itself. It is important to realize that if one of these occurs, it does not mean you will necessarily get all the other symptoms too.
Eye problems will usually occur and frequently change in type or severity for between six months and two years. Once stabilized, it is unusual for the eyes to start changing again. Some patients are left with permanent changes, and in others the eyes return to normal. A great deal can be done to improve these conditions with medical treatment, although some patients will need surgery to help ease their issues.

How Can Plastic Surgery Help Eye Bags
There isnt a best cosmetic eye bag treatment for all thyroid patients. A comprehensive evaluation by a cosmetic eyelid surgeon can one determine appropriate options for a particular patient. Aesthetic treatment may be skin care, wrinkle relaxers , and injectable fillers . These nonsurgical treatments can be the first step before eyelid surgery.
Eyelid surgery with fat removal can be considered to reduce the eye bag. Lower blepharoplasty for thyroid patients may involve an incision hidden inside the eyelid to avoid external scars. However, a patients thyroid condition should be stable prior to elective surgery.
For patients with Graves disease and an elevated thyroid gland, then a more advanced type of eye surgery may be performed. Orbital decompression is a procedure where the bone around the eye is removed to allow the eye tissue to relax and set back more into the skull. Dr. Chaboki is a specialized facial plastic surgeon who performs such advanced eyelid procedures.

The Role Of Fishing Sunglasses
The special effect of the polarized lens is to effectively eliminate and filter the scattered light from the beam. In general, a polarized lens can arrange all the light in the same direction, so that the visual field is clear and natural. It also blocks ultraviolet light, reducing damage to the eyes and clearing out blinding light. Fishing glasses have the function of polarized light, so they can block all harmful light without affecting the transmission of visible light, which can really achieve the function of eye protection. In addition to the basic anti-ultraviolet function, fishing glasses also have the functions of anti-glare, reducing pavement reflection light and water scale light, etc., suitable for driving, fishing, tourism, and daily wear.

What Causes Bags Under The Eyes
There are several reasons people get puffy eyes, including:
- High-salt diet: Eating a lot of salty foods causes you to retain water and leads to swelling.
- Allergies: Congestion and inflammation from allergies can sometimes exacerbate under-eye puffiness.
- Medical conditions: Some health conditions such as thyroid problems can cause the eyes to become swollen.
- Genetics: Having under-eye bags can be a physical characteristic that runs in your family.

When I Got Home I Started Googling Bug Eyes And Droopy Eyelids
Thats when I found out about Graves eye disease, also known as thyroid eye disease . As I learned, puffy eyelids, a gritty feeling in your eyes, and bulging eyes could all be due to swelling from an abnormal immune reaction to the muscles and fatty tissue around my eyes.
While its not a given when youre diagnosed with Graves disease that youll develop TED, up to 50 percent of people with Graves disease have eye symptoms, most often within six months of their diagnosis, according to the American Thyroid Association. This may be because the same out-of-whack antibody that attacks your thyroid can also target your eyes.
I suspected that this was what was going on with me, so I went to an optometrist that spring and asked for a referral to an eye doctor who worked with TED patients. He ignored my requests, but I walked out with a new pair of glasses.
After more research online, I found an eye doctor and surgeon near me who worked with TED patients. At my first appointment, the doctor told me he wasnt sure if I had TED, and if I did, it was a mild case. He advised that I schedule a follow-up appointment in six months.
When I went back in, they told me there was nothing they could do to help with my swollen eyelids or bulging eyesId just have to live with them. I left completely devastated and cried all the way home.

What Are The Longer
With the correct treatment, thyroid eye disease can be well managed and patients can live full and active lives. Most of the effects of the thyroid eye disease will settle with time and when thyroid function is stabilised. Patients taking carbimazole tablets to treat hyperthyroidism may need to take them daily for life, although definitive treatment of the overactive thyroid gland with radioiodine or surgery is generally preferred, once the eye disease has settled down. Regular blood tests should be carried out to monitor thyroid hormone levels and the dose of carbimazole adjusted accordingly. However, there are other treatment options such as thyroidectomy or radioiodine treatment that can be considered once the eye disease has settled down.
The changes in the physical appearance of the eyes can have a psychological effect on the individual, causing low self-esteem. The long-term consequences of the disease, even after the thyroid has settled down, may be difficult to accept. Some patients may have a permanent change to their appearance, which may require surgery. Very rarely, there is a permanent loss of vision this can happen if the disease is left untreated at the sight-threatening stage.
Patients should stop smoking as this is known to aggravate the condition. Sunglasses may be necessary even when indoors. If double vision is not corrected, driving will be dangerous. Patients should discuss any concerns with their doctor.
Surgery For Bags Under The Eyes
Eyelid surgery is called blepharoplasty, and the procedure is tailored to resolve specific needs. Typically, the surgery removes excess fat from the area beneath the eye.
The surgical incision is made inside the lower lid. It should not be visible after healing.
Eyelid surgery corrects various problems, including these:
- Excess skin on the lower lids
- Drooping lower eyelids
- Excess skin on the upper eyelids
- Puffiness on the upper eyelids
Blepharoplasty is often done in an outpatient clinic, such as a plastic surgery center or office.

Shes Got Hypothyroidism Eyes: Why Your Eyes Are More Vulnerable
ThyroSisters, lets put the spotlight on your beautiful eyes. Have you been experiencing more eye strain, dry eyes, or other vision problems, especially since COVID? You arent the only one. When you add hours upon hours of pandemic screen time to this, it can create a perfect storm, harming your beautiful eyes.
Keep reading to find out my favorite sight-saving natural solutions and say goodbye to your thyroid-related eye problemsor stop them from developing in the first place. But before we dig down deep into specific thyroid-related eye concerns, lets tackle a couple of general eye problems. Im seeing these problems in more and more of my patients.
Lifestyle & Home Remedies
The first line of defense to reduce or get rid of undereye bags is often home remedies.
To make a compress, wet a washcloth or clean, small towel with cold water. Sit up and gently place the compress on the skin under and around the eyes. Hold the compress with gentle pressure and dab the area.
In addition, popular DIY compress-like remedies include soothing closed eyes with slices of cool cucumbers.
Some people use over-the-counter creams that narrow blood vessels to reduce undereye swelling. These may work, but caution is advised as these creams can sometimes cause irritation.
Caffeine may be useful as it is known to constrict blood vessels. Many cosmetics include caffeine to reduce eye puffiness. Some over-the-counter contain caffeine and vitamin K, which both may help reduce eye bags.
A DIY caffeine-inspired home remedy is applying chilled black or green tea bags on closed eyes for relief.

Your specialist can provide simple solutions to the irritation, tearing and swelling often associated with TED. Often, this involves something as simple as using artificial tears during the day and lubrication ointment at night. Your specialist can determine when your eyes have stopped changing and whether corrective surgery is needed. Your specialist may also watch for the rare serious problems associated with TED that need prompt treatment.
Am I At Risk For Graves Eye Disease
If you have Graves disease, youre at risk for Graves eye disease. About 1 in 3 people with Graves disease develop some of these eye problems.
Smoking increases the risk for eye problems in people with Graves disease. If you smoke, make a plan to quit. You can call 1-800-QUIT-NOW for free support or check out the resources on Smokefree.gov.
Graves disease is much more common in women and usually develops before age 40. Youre at higher risk if you have a family history of Graves disease or if you have another autoimmune disease, like rheumatoid arthritis.

Spotlight On Aging: Hypothyroidism In Older People
Many older people have some degree of hypothyroidism. About 10% of women and 6% of men are affected.
Typical symptoms, such as weight gain, muscle cramps, tingling of the hands, and the inability to tolerate cold, are less common among older people. When such symptoms do occur among older people, they are less obvious.
Older people may also have less typical symptoms. For example, they may lose weight, become confused, and have a decreased appetite, joint stiffness, joint and muscle pains, weakness, and a tendency to fall.
Because symptoms in older people can be different, are often subtle and vague, and are common among older people who do not have hypothyroidism, doctors may not recognize these symptoms as being caused by hypothyroidism. A screening test, in which blood levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone are measured, is important. The test should be done at age 65 even if people have no symptoms of hypothyroidism.

The thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of your neck. This endocrine gland is responsible for regulating your bodys energy use. It works with other glands and systems of the body to help determine what the body needs. For example, if you are cold or hot, this gland creates hormones that travel to the bodys cells to help regulate your body temperature. When you have issues with your thyroid, whether it is overactive or underactive , it can affect your body in different ways. As the thyroid gland regulates cellular metabolism in all the cells of your body, virtually every body system is affected when there is an issue with thyroid function.

Medical Options For Under
If youre fed up with under-eye bags, these medical treatments can improve and even eliminate them:
Nonsurgical optionsThese noninvasive treatments smooth the under-eye area:
- Filler: This treatment places a filler material where the under-eye area and cheek meet to create a smooth transition. The injection is performed in a doctors office under local anesthetic. Results last six to 12 months.
- Laser resurfacing: This treatment uses a laser to remove surface layers of wrinkly skin in the under-eye area and stimulate new collagen growth, resulting in firmer skin. Results can last years, depending on your skin type and sun exposure.
- Chemical peel: A chemical peel also treats wrinkly under-eye skin by removing superficial top layers. An in-office application of a chemical solution dissolves old skin cells to reveal tighter, brighter skin. Depending on your skin type and sun exposure, results can last a few years.
Surgical optionA lower eyelid lift is an outpatient procedure where the surgeon readjusts the fat in the lower eye area and tightens the muscle and skin to create a smooth appearance. In most cases, a lower eyelid lift gets rid of under-eye bags for life its rare for people to need future touch-ups.However, says Desai, sometimes patients require multiple therapies to treat under-eye bags, such as combining laser resurfacing with filler or an eyelid lift.
