How Do You Treat Thyroid Cancer In Dogs

Cancer in dogs treatment is complex and often requires combining several approaches. The most common treatment options for thyroid cancer in dogs are surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy.

Surgical Removal. Surgery is the treatment of choice for moveable thyroid tumors that are not spread to other organs. Considering the number of blood vessels in the region, removing thyroid masses can be challenging. Post-surgery, dogs need monitoring of their calcium levels .

Chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is the ideal treatment option for dogs that show evidence of metastasis. Generally speaking, thyroid cancer in dogs is moderately responsive to chemo. Dogs handle chemotherapy better than humans . Chemo is usually combined with surgery.

Radiation Therapy. Radiation therapy can be traditional or based on the use of radioactive iodine. Radioactive iodine is effective in the treatment of canine thyroid carcinoma. The dog is given radioactive iodine , which destroys the cancer cells in the thyroid tissue once it reaches the target site. Radiation is recommended for dogs that are not candidates for surgery and dogs that have undergone surgery but show signs of severe vascular invasion.

In addition to these mainstream treatment options, you can talk to your veterinary oncologist about holistic cancer treatments.

Cause Of Thyroid Cancer: Genetics

Effects of Thyroidectomy on Voice

As we now know from the presentation above, genes play an important role in how a cell changes from a normal cell, into one that is a cause of thyroid cancer. Although in some situations a normal cells genetics are damaged to change it into a cancerous cell, in other cases the gene that causes thyroid cancer is inherited from a parent.

A family history of thyroid cancer in a close family member increases the risk of thyroid cancer, even if there is no known genetic condition, syndrome or mutation that can cause thyroid cancer in that persons family. We know that a gene or genes is acting as a cause of thyroid cancer for such a patient, we just dont know which gene it is.

On the other hand there are some genetic syndromes that we know are associated with genetic causes of thyroid cancer. One of the most famous genetic causes of thyroid cancer are the MEN2 syndromes associated with mutations in the RET gene. MEN2a is associated with medullary thyroid cancer, pheochromocytoma and parathyroid adenomas. MEN2b is associated with medullary thyroid cancer, pheochromocytoma and mucosal neuromas.

Papillary thyroid cancer is the most common type of thyroid cancer, and it is associated with FAP . FAP is a condition that causes many precancerous polyps to grow in the large intestine, but can also lead to other types of growths including desmoid tumors, stomach tumors and of course cause thyroid cancer.

The Thin Beauty Ideal

Western societies equate thinness with female beauty and success, a condition known as the thin beauty ideal. Studies have demonstrated that cultural pressures to achieve the thin beauty ideal can lead to increased body dissatisfaction and weight concerns, which may then contribute to the development of bulimia nervosa. Western norms for male bodies emphasize extreme muscularity in an equally unrealistic standard. With modern developments like social media, western ideals and values have been disseminated globally. Recent studies have demonstrated increases in eating disorders in non-western cultures as well as minority groups.

This can make it more difficult to get pregnant. However, if you do not want to have children right now and have sex, you should use birth control.

Overweight or obesity may also cause problems during pregnancy. Overweight and obesity raises your risk for:

  • Gestational hypertension and preeclampsia . If not controlled, both problems can threaten the life of the mother and the baby.
  • Gestational diabetes . If not controlled, gestational diabetes can cause you to have a large baby. This raises your risk for a C-section.16

Pregnancy can raise the risk for binge eating disorder in women who are at higher risk for eating disorders. In one study, almost half of the women with binge eating disorder got the condition during pregnancy. The research suggests that binge eating during pregnancy may be caused by:17

  • Worry over pregnancy weight gain. Women may binge because they feel a loss of control over their bodies because of the pregnancy weight.

A thyroid tumor is a mass of cancerous cells in the thyroid gland. Thyroid tumors in dogs can be benign or malignant. Benign thyroid tumors are called adenomas, while the malignant are adenocarcinomas.

Benign thyroid tumors in dogs grow large and are usually functional, meaning they produce thyroid hormones which leads to a condition known as hyperthyroidism.

Malignant tumors are smaller and non-functional but spread to other body parts . They also damage the normal thyroid tissue, causing hypothyroidism.

In dogs, most thyroid tumors are malignant and result in metastatic disease. Based on VCA Hospitals, thyroid adenomas are rare and account for only 10% of all thyroid tumor cases.

Different Kinds Of Thyroid Cancer

There are 4 main types of thyroid cancer. They are listed below. Your doctor can tell you more about the kind you have.

  • Papillary thyroid cancer is the most common kind of thyroid cancer. It may also be called differentiated thyroid cancer. This kind tends to grow very slowly and is most often in only one lobe of the thyroid gland. Even though they grow slowly, papillary cancers often spread to the lymph nodes in the neck.
  • Follicular cancer is the next most common type. Its more common in countries where people dont get enough iodine in their diet. These cancers do not tend to spread to lymph nodes, but they can spread to other parts of the body, like the lungs or bones.
  • Medullary cancer is a rare type of thyroid cancer. It starts in a group of thyroid cells called C-cells. C-cells make calcitonin, a hormone that helps control the amount of calcium in the blood.
  • Anaplastic cancer is a rare type of thyroid cancer. It often spreads quickly into the neck and to other parts of the body, and is very hard to treat.

Learning New Patterns Of Behavior

Stopping the cycle of bingeing and purging is possible. This is achieved in treatment through a variety of interventions, including establishing a regular pattern of nourishment, psychoeducation about the cyclical nature of bulimia behaviors, and a supportive, therapeutic environment while the individual learns a new pattern of behavior.
