A TSH test is used to find out how well your thyroid is working. It can tell if you have hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism in your blood. But a TSH test cant show what is causing a thyroid problem.
If you take prescription thyroid hormone medicine because of hypothyroidism or because you had your thyroid removed, youll have regular TSH tests to check your thyroid hormone levels. TSH tests are also used to monitor your thyroid hormone levels after treatment for hyperthyroidism.
Does Being Ill Affect The Test
Being unwell could affect test results temporarily. Sometimes, infections or a bout of an inflammatory condition can alter results until the illness resolves, so if you receive an unexpected result when unwell, it is probably wise to retest after youve recovered to rule it out.
Also, as diarrhoea can interfere with the absorption of your thyroid medication, this could affect your thyroid hormone levels and any testing.

There are various effects of the abnormal levels of the Androstenedione on the kid. Im always asked, Can these thyroid conditions be reversed? Absolutely. Get rid of the cause and the body reverses them. Contrary to popular belief, the doctor doesnt do it, the body does. When you get rid of the causes through my multi-therapeutic approach , the body can do amazing things.
Heres a common scenario for many thyroid patients: youre taking the thyroid medication that your doctor prescribes, and your blood work looks normal. - Excessive urination and thirst could indicate diabetes.
- Swollen feet and ankles could indicate kidney disease.
- A high blood pressure reading could indicate high cholesterol.
- A yellowish tint to your skin and eyes may indicate a liver condition.
- Fatigue and an irregular heartbeat could indicate an electrolyte imbalance.
- Pale skin and leg cramps could indicate anemia or a vitamin B12 deficiency.
Many other symptoms could make you need a fasting lab test. Your doctor might order a fasting lab test to rule out some of these conditions.

When To Take Thyroid Medications To Get Accurate Lab Results
- TSH– This is a pituitary hormone that responds to low/high amounts of circulating thyroid hormone. In advanced cases of Hashimoto’s and primary hypothyroidism, this lab test will be elevated. In the case of Graves’ disease the TSH will be low. People with Hashimoto’s and central hypothyroidism may have a normal reading on this test.
- Free T3 & Free T4-These tests measure the levels of active thyroid hormone circulating in the body. When these levels are low, but your TSH tests in the normal range, this may lead your physician to suspect a rare type of hypothyroidism, known as central hypothyroidism.

How Does The Thyroid Gland Function
The major thyroid hormone secreted by the thyroid gland is thyroxine, also called T4 because it contains four iodine atoms. To exert its effects, T4 is converted to triiodothyronine by the removal of an iodine atom. This occurs mainly in the liver and in certain tissues where T3 acts, such as in the brain. The amount of T4 produced by the thyroid gland is controlled by another hormone, which is made in the pituitary gland located at the base of the brain, called thyroid stimulating hormone . The amount of TSH that the pituitary sends into the bloodstream depends on the amount of T4 that the pituitary sees. If the pituitary sees very little T4, then it produces more TSH to tell the thyroid gland to produce more T4. Once the T4 in the bloodstream goes above a certain level, the pituitarys production of TSH is shut off. In fact, the thyroid and pituitary act in many ways like a heater and a thermostat. When the heater is off and it becomes cold, the thermostat reads the temperature and turns on the heater. When the heat rises to an appropriate level, the thermostat senses this and turns off the heater. Thus, the thyroid and the pituitary, like a heater and thermostat, turn on and off. This is illustrated in the figure below.
Is It Ok To Drink Water Before A Blood Test
Its fine to drink water before a blood test, unless youre instructed otherwise by your doctor. This is different from some surgical procedures, which may require you to have a totally empty stomach.
Tap or bottled water are both OK, but leave the squeeze of lemon for another time. Seltzer and club soda are off-limits. Carbonated beverages, flavored or otherwise, shouldnt be consumed during a fast, and neither should any type of tea.

What Is The Thyroid
Located on the lower part of the front of the neck, the thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland that measures two inches in length. For men, the gland is located underneath the Adams apple, near the windpipe.
The thyroid, which is part of the endocrine system, is responsible for the metabolism.
When there are no issues with the thyroid, and its a normal size, it cannot be felt however, when it doesnt work right, it may become enlarged or could grow lumps of extra tissue.

Research shows that fasting, especially early in the morning, may impact TSH levels. A fasting test typically results in higher TSH levels versus one done in the afternoon.

You dont need any special preparations for a TSH blood test. If your health care provider has ordered other blood tests, you may need to fast for several hours before the test. Your health care provider will let you know if there are any special instructions to follow.

What Do I Test If I Dont Have A Period
If your period has stopped showing up , this is what is called amenorrhea.
- Primary amenorrhea is when you havent gotten your period by age 15 or 16.
- Secondary amenorrhea is when you have had a period, but now its gone.
If your regular period is missing for three or more months, or your irregular period is missing for six or more months, this is considered secondary amenorrhea.
Often, doctors will try to prescribe the birth control pill as a means of treating amenorrhea. If you begin birth control you will not be able to test FSH, LH, estradiol or progesterone accurately.
The Endocrine Society guidelines clearly advocate against the use of the pill in women with functional hypothalamic amenorrhea solely to restore a period or even improve bone mass. They also recommend educating patients who are currently using the pill that it may mask these issues.
