The easiest way to start is with the simplest anti-inflammatory diet option.

A Paleo diet is gluten-free, dairy-free, legume free, and low-carb, and is likely to remove artificial ingredients that may aggravate an autoimmune illness like Hashimotos.

If you see little to no improvement after three weeks on the Paleo diet, consider trying either the autoimmune Paleo diet or the low FODMAP diet .

The Autoimmune Paleo Diet is the hypothyroidism diet we recommend to our patients. Similar to the Whole30 diet, the AIP diet restricts your intake of potential food allergens.

This thyroid diet is short-term. Why?

This is a very restrictive diet, the main point of which is to identify any potential food allergies through elimination. If hypothyroidism symptoms decrease during the AIP diet, we recommend slowly introducing one food back into your diet at a time. If a reintroduced food triggers a worsening of your symptoms, cut that food allergen out of your diet more permanently.

Balancing Blood Sugar By Limiting The Intake Of Carbohydrates

You might be surprised to learn that, while protein, fat, and micronutrients are all required by the human body, carbohydrates are not a required nutrient. While fat is required for normal cell function, we can actually survive on little to no carbohydrates in our diets.

Not only are carbs not required, theyre also the greatest contributor to blood sugar imbalances which some 50 percent of those with Hashimotos may have! These imbalances can contribute to anxiety, weight gain, hair loss, irritability, weakened adrenals, fatigue, and increased thyroid antibodies. Limiting ones carbohydrate intake and consuming plenty of good fats and proteins instead, can help balance blood sugar.

I recommend staying away from processed carbohydrates, as those will cause the greatest blood sugar swings. Stick to natural carbohydrates, such as sweet potatoes and berries, but not too many at first. For best results, you may want to limit yourself to one to two servings of carbohydrates a day if youre still in the early stages of your healing journey and are struggling with blood sugar swings.

For some of my clients, even too much fruit can throw them off. You will be able to improve your tolerance to carbohydrates as you heal.

There is mounting evidence for the existence of a robust thyroidgut axis. It is reflected by a significant influence of the intrinsic bacterial microflora in the gut on the immune system reactivity and the thyroid function . Furthermore, the concomitance of thyroid- and gut-related disorders is common, such as TH/Graves disease and celiac disease/non-celiac wheat sensitivity. Thyroid diseases are frequently associated with dysbiosis.

An exciting pilot study saw improvements in the quality of life and symptoms of women with Hashimotos thyroiditis who used the AIP diet for 10 weeks . Their tests showed no significant changes to any measures of thyroid function or antibodies, but their inflammation decreased by 29%. This illustrates how antibody levels dont necessarily track with symptoms, and shouldnt solely be used as a benchmark for improvement.

While the direct benefits of using an AIP diet for Hashimotos needs more research, theres additional evidence that shows the AIP type diet to be helpful in reducing inflammation and other types of autoimmunity .

If you dont see enough symptom relief from the Paleo diet, the AIP diet is a promising next step as many people have found benefit from this nutrient-dense diet.
