Armour Thyroid May Be Better For Weight Loss Compared To Other Thyroid Medications
I go over this topic a little more in detail on #7 when I discuss that many people actually prefer NDT formulations over T4-only formulations.
You can skip there to see the studies which cite that Armour thyroid helps promote weight loss more than T4-only medications.
Here, I just want to introduce you to that fact and explain it in a little more detail.
Are some thyroid medications better at helping with weight loss?
The answer to this question is quite complex but I can say the answer is a definitive yes.
Im not going to go into all of the details about why this is the case but I do want to point out one major reason.
And that reason has to do with T3 thyroid hormone.
T3 thyroid hormone is the most active thyroid hormone and Armour thyroid contains this medication.
This is unique because most patients are taking Synthroid which does NOT contain T3.
T3, because it is the most potent thyroid hormone, has been shown to directly stimulate your metabolism .
All of these things contribute to the thermogenic effect seen when using T3.
So, T3 absolutely can help with weight loss but it shouldnt be used as a weight-loss therapy.
What do I mean?
I mean that T3 thyroid hormone should only be used if you are deficient in this hormone.
If you abuse it , you open the door to potentially causing harm to your body.
The good news is that most people with thyroid-related issues ALSO have low T3 levels.
This means that using T3, in this setting, is perfectly safe and healthy.
What Are Armour Thyroid Tablets Used For
Porcine thyroid glands are used to make Armour Thyroid tablets or VitaliThy capsules, which are given to people suffering from hypothyroidism, goiter, or thyroid cancer.
Porcine thyroids are dried and powdered before being made into tablets. Each tablet of Armour Thyroid 60 mg contains 38 mcg of triiodothyronine and 9 mcg of thyroxine.
Armour Thyroid is different from other thyroid medications because it contains both natural T3 and T4 hormones. These hormones are responsible for regulating metabolism, heart rate, and body temperature. Armour Thyroid is typically taken once a day, either with or without food. It is important to take Armour Thyroid at the same time each day to maintain an even level of medication in the body.
How To Get Armour Thyroid Without Insurance
Armour Thyroid can be an expensive prescription drug for many people, and monthly refills can be hard to afford over time. In addition, people without commercial health insurance, Medicare, or Medicaid may have to pay full retail price for Armour Thyroid or similar medications.
AbbVie is the manufacturer of Armour Thyroid, and they currently offer a patient assistance program that may help cover the cover of Armour Thyroid. Check their website for exact eligibility requirements. If you dont meet the requirements to save through the manufacturer, there are other ways to save money.

To make sure desiccated thyroid is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:
heart disease, angina
any type of diabetes or
problems with your adrenal gland.
Desiccated thyroid is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby, but your dose needs may be different during pregnancy. Tell your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medicine.

How To Talk To Your Healthcare Provider About Dte
If you’re being treated for hypothyroidism with levothyroxine alone and you still have symptoms of persistent hypothyroidism, talk to your healthcare provider about the possibility of trying DTE. Though it has been in use for more than 100 years, DTE is still somewhat controversial and it can be a challenge to find healthcare providers who will prescribe it. Most healthcare providers today were taught in medical school that levothyroxine is the only acceptable option for treating hypothyroidism.

Along with that, many healthcare providers aren’t aware that DTE is still available or that it can be used safely to treat some hypothyroid patients. Some believe that prescribing DTE is difficult. These ideas are unfortunately reinforced by negative opinions from levothyroxine sales representatives, unfounded rumors that DTE is going off the market, and other anecdotal information.
Let your healthcare provider know that you’ve done your homework on DTE and that recent studies have shown that it can be very beneficial for people who aren’t doing well on levothyroxine. Though, in 2012, the American Thyroid Association said that DTE should not be used to treat hypothyroidism, it conceded in its 2014 recommendations that some people respond well to DTE or a combination of synthetic T4/T3 therapy.

Diet And Lifestyle Changes
Sugar and processed foods, both of which can lead to increased inflammation in the body, can interfere with normal thyroid hormone activity. This may make symptoms of thyroid disease worsen. Reducing the amount of sugar and processed foods may be beneficial to thyroid health and may help with weight loss since weight gain is often a symptom of hypothyroidism.
Physical and mental stress can be a trigger for upsetting thyroid function. Stress can also cause flare-ups in symptoms of hypothyroidism. Control stress by engaging in self-care every day such as by exercising, meditation, aromatherapy with essential oils, or any other activity that is relaxing.

Understanding Armour Thyroid And Hypothyroidism
Are There Alternatives To Armour Thyroid
The standard prescription drug for hypothyroidism and thyroid suppression is levothyroxine, also known by the brand name Synthroid. Levothyroxine contains a synthetic version of T4, and it is usually covered by health insurance.
Armour Thyroid alternatives typically include other desiccated thyroid extracts, which are not approved by the FDA. In addition, one or more of them may not be available at your local pharmacy. Instead of a local chain or grocery-store pharmacy, you may be able to purchase porcine thyroid tablets from a compounding pharmacy.
Armour Thyroid and levothyroxine alternatives include Thyrolar , which contains a combination of synthetic T4 and T3. Cytomel is another alternative that contains a synthetic version of T3. You should check your plans drug formulary to see whether your thyroid medication is covered.
Some over-the-counter medications and supplements may help relieve the symptoms of an underactive thyroid, but none of them are approved to replace low levels of thyroid hormones or help suppress thyroid growths, such as goiters, nodules, and thyroid cancer.

Its The Most Expensive Formulation Of Ndt
Believe it or not, Armour thyroid is the most expensive formulation of NDT!
This information is according to the cash price on goodrx.com.
This website shows the cash price of a 30 day supply of 60mg of Armour thyroid:
It will run you around $30.00 per month if you dont have insurance .
You can compare this to other NDT formulations, such as Nature-throid, which is around $8.00 per month for 30 tablets of 60mg:
So, thats potentially a savings of around $20 per month if you use one formulation over the other.
While price is certainly not the only thing you should consider, or even the most important thing you should consider, when looking at your thyroid medication, it can still be an important factor for many people.
If you find that youve already tried Nature-throid or NP thyroid and they dont work for you then paying more for Armour thyroid may make sense.
But if you are paying just because your doctor put you on it without trying other formulations then you may want to at least consider them.
You can switch to a different formulation of NDT such as NP thyroid or Nature-throid on a grain-for-grain basis.
So, lets say you are currently taking 1.5 grains of Armour thyroid.
If you wanted to switch to Nature-Throid you would switch over to 1.5 grains .
This would get you the same equivalent doses of T4 and T3 even though the mg dosage is slightly different .
Example Of Titrating Off Of Thyroid Medication: What It Looks Like
To illustrate how this might look for you, lets create two different scenarios:
Lets imagine you are someone who is taking 100mcg of levothyroxine. In this case, you have been taking levothyroxine for 2-3 years and you are using it for hypothyroidism of unknown cause .
Because youve only been taking thyroid medication for 2-3 years and because you are taking levothyroxine, you can try to get off of your thyroid medication using the standard approach.
This is what it would look like for you:
- Start by taking thyroid support supplements for 2-3 months before you attempt to reduce your dose
- After 2-3 months of using your thyroid supplements, you would reduce your dose of levothyroxine down to 75mcg
- After 2 weeks you would then decrease your dose down to 50mcg
- After another 2 weeks you would reduce your dose down to 25mcg
- After another 2 weeks you would then reduce your dose down to 0mcg
- Allow your body 2-4 weeks to acclimate before rechecking your labs
- *Note: you should recheck your labs at the 6 week mark or if you experience a sudden or abrupt worsening in your thyroid symptoms
In this example, you would be able to completely come off of your thyroid medication in about a 6 week period.
Because levothyroxine stays in the system for about 1 month ), you will still have some residual thyroid hormone floating around in your body for 4 weeks after you completely go off of your thyroid medication.
Lets use another example.
