Calorie Restricted Diets Don’t Work
If you’re like most thyroid patients, at some points, I’m guessing you’ve tried a calorie-restricted diet.
At age 12, my doctor put me on my first calorie-restricted diet. Not only was the diet humiliating, but the calorie-restrictions didn’t work.
Sadly, until I was 35 years old, every doctor missed my thyroid condition. Perhaps if they used the right thyroid testing and looked my symptoms, those doctors would have discovered the problem started with my thyroid, not my diet.

Do you have a thyroid condition and you’ve tried a calorie-restricted diet but had limited results in losing weight and keeping it off?
That’s why it’s so important to know calorie-restricted diets don’t work long-term, and they make thyroid function worse.
A common problem for thyroid patients is thyroid hormone conversion. When you’re healthy, your body converts T4 thyroid hormone into T3.
That T3 gives you energy, supports your immune system, and helps boost your metabolism. However, T4 hormone conversion doesn’t always go smoothly for thyroid patients.
Even if you’re taking thyroid medication, T4 conversion is a potential issue that may affect your weight. Other factors can also affect thyroid hormone conversion, including stress, inflammation, illness, lack of sleep, digestion issues, and mineral deficiencies.
A calorie-restricted diet also affects thyroid T4 to T3 conversion.
Increase The Thermic Effect Of Food
Resting metabolic rate typically increases as much as two to three times more after eating proteins versus carbohydrates and fats. Digesting complex, high-fiber carbohydrates like high-fiber vegetables and cereals burn more calories than simple carbohydrates. You can increase the thermic effect of the foods you eat by focusing on quality protein, high-fiber fruits and vegetables, and an occasional high-fiber grain to meet your caloric needs.

Diet And Thyroid Medication
Youll want to make sure youre taking your thyroid medication on an empty stomach to promote optimal absorption. Experts suggest taking thyroid medications like levothyroxine at least 30 to 60 minutes before breakfast or at least 3 to 4 hours after dinner .
Keep in mind that this includes avoiding beverages, foods, and supplements that could interfere with medication absorption.
Certain supplements and even coffee can significantly impact thyroid medication absorption, so its important to always take your medication on an empty stomach and wait at least 30 minutes before consuming foods or beverages besides water. You should also avoiding taking thyroid medication within 4 hours of taking iron or calcium supplements (
If you have hypothyroidism, try incorporating the following nutritious foods into your diet:
Keep in mind that some people with hypothyroidism may benefit from avoiding gluten and other ingredients like dairy, but others may not have to cut these foods from their diet and may be able to consume gluten and dairy without issue.
This is why its important to develop an eating plan that works for you and your specific health needs.

Myth No : My Weight Gain Is From Hypothyroidism
There may be weight gain associated with an underactive thyroid, but its typically only 5 to 7 pounds.
Significant weight gain beyond this has nothing to do with thyroid function, says Dr. Bakar. To avoid weight gain, I tell patients with hypothyroidism to monitor their portion sizes and calories, and to avoid empty calories from, say, sugary beverages.

This is a frequently asked question about thyroid health and nutrition that I get: How can I boost my metabolism when I have very low thyroid function, or none at all? Maybe you have even had your thyroid removed and are struggling with the effects of a reduced metabolism.
I will admit: I do have a big fear of losing my currently good metabolism. I fear the hypothyroid state.
So, I figured I would answer this question for all my readers out there, and to help squash my own fears, and let you know that it will be OK. There are many ways to boost the metabolism and make sure you are feeling closer to 100%.
Iodine For Thyroid Support
Some may be deficient in iodine which leads to lower thyroid function. Iodine is needed to produce thyroid hormone.
A word of caution: Iodine may not be appropriate for those with Hashimotos as many report that taking iodine can cause a flare up and increase the autoimmune attack. It is best to work with a healthcare professional on this one, and iodine testing may be most appropriate.
Interestingly enough, some research has said that when patients severely restrict iodine, they were able to reduce their autoimmune attack.
