Video: Natural ways to treat thyroid disease

The thyroid sits in the front of the neck and is responsible for secreting proper amounts of thyroid hormone. The thyroid is incredibly important because it effects every cell in the human body by helping to increase or decrease the metabolic activity of the cells.

There are a variety of causes as to why your thyroid might be malfunctioning. Below are some of these causes:

Nutrient Deficiencies:

Chromium, copper, iodine, iron, selenium, zinc, vitamin A, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12

Beta blockers, birth control pills, estrogen, iodinated contrast agents, lithium, phytoin, steroids, theophylline

Too many cruciferous vegetables, soy

Aging, alcohol, lipoic acid, diabetes, fluoride, lead, mercury, obesity, pesticides, radiation, stress, surgery

Improve Your Sleep Routine

Not getting enough sleep can add to your bodys stress load, so prioritizing quality shuteye is key to healing your thyroid, according to Safdieh. One study published in the Annals of Occupational and Environmental Medicine even found that night shift workers, who typically have poorer sleep quality, are at higher risk for thyroid diseases than people who work a daytime schedule. There are lots of ways you can get better sleep, from developing a nighttime routine to limiting caffeine intake during the day.

What To Eat If Youre Managing Hypothyroidism

When you research the best foods for hypothyroidism, youre not likely to come up with any surprising selections. There is no one food that will increase your thyroid hormone, but there are foods that a person with hypothyroidism should eat more of, Rizzo says.

The following are some foods that contain important vitamins and nutrients for hypothyroidism.

Can Hyperthyroidism Be Cured

Traditional treatment for hyperthyroidism can include medication and surgery.

If the thyroid is completely removed, technically hyperthyroidism is reversed, however, now the patient has hypothyroidism and has to be on levothyroxine for life. This option is only considered in very extreme circumstances.

While you can not cure an autoimmune condition, you can put it into remission and eliminate symptoms with surgical, pharmaceutical, and natural therapies.

Hyperthyroidism affects the heart much in the same way it negatively affects bone health.

Ive mentioned that hyperthyroidism can result in an increased heart rate and palpitations. But the real picture is this the increased cardiac output can be 50-300% higher than in other people without thyroid disease.

This significantly impacts the heart and can ultimately result in heart failure, atrial fibrillation, and dilated cardiomyopathy.

Improving your overall health through eating properly and ruling out adrenal fatigue is the first step to helping your thyroid heal on its own, naturally. In addition, ensuring adequate sleep, recovery from any kind of exercise and proper stress reduction techniques are all critical in improving thyroid function.

Here are SIX STEPS to help your thyroid start functioning at its optimal best:

1. Foods You Should Be Consuming:

SeaweedsSeaweed products like nori, kelp, dulse, wakame, etc. are very high in iodine which is what a lot of individuals with thyroid problems are lacking. Iodine is essential for proper thyroid functioning because it helps the thyroid gland produce the hormone thyroxin which regulates our metabolism.

Selenium-rich FoodsA major contributor to thyroid problems is a lack of selenium. This mineral keeps the various hormones produced by the thyroid gland in balance. Foods rich in selenium include garlic, kelp, onion, sunflower and sesame seeds as well as brazil nuts!

Copper & Iron-rich FoodsCopper and iron are also crucial to help the thyroid function properly. Foods rich in copper include things such as sunflower & hemp seeds, nuts , shittake mushrooms, spirulina, and tomatoes. How Nutrient Deficiencies Can Trigger Hashimotos Hypothyroidism

How to Fix an Underactive Thyroid (No More Zombie Mode)

Ari Whitten: We dont have too much more time here so I want to just try and walk a couple more questions what do you think about nutrient deficiencies in the context of Hashimotos, are there some nutrient deficiencies that can contribute to the problem?

Dr. Izabella Wentz: Absolutely, so thats a very well-known root cause, and the most common nutrient deficiencies are going to be selenium, thiamin, vitamin D, B12, ferritin, as well as magnesium. So these are the things that I recommend looking into. Vitamin D, ferritin, B12, you want to test for. The others, I actually recommend supplementing with regardless of doing a test that shows the deficiency, because you might still benefit. And most of them youre not going to see them on a blood test.

Ari Whitten: I think there was an impressive study on thiamin. or not thiamin or riboflavin, I know youve talked about it in relation to the fatigue in people with Hashimotos.

Dr. Izabella Wentz: Yes, thiamin is to me its one of the best things you can do for thyroid fatigue. When I was in pharmacy school I was taught that thiamin deficiency was only in alcoholics, but thats the furthest thing from the truth. Truth is that really high thiamin deficiency is going to be in alcoholics. That we can have subclinical thiamin deficiency when we have any kind of gut issues. So, people with Hashimotos, Crohns disease, irritable bowel syndrome, they could be at risk for this.

Do Not Take Iodine Supplements

One change I made immediately once I found out about my thyroid problems was to stop taking iodine. In some cases, iodine can help people with hypothyroidism, but for the most part, people in the U.S. have sufficient levels of iodine to prevent thyroid disorders.

Taking iodine when you are hypothyroid can cause problems because getting more than you need is not better, and if your hypothyroidism is caused by Hashimotos, then youre pouring fuel on the fire of your autoimmune attack. In fact, a 2012 review found that restricting iodine could, in some cases, reverse hypothyroid symptoms.

Bottom Line: Take Care Of Your Thyroid

All of these changes together made a big difference for me even before I started taking thyroid medication. A reminder, though: Im not a doctor and I dont play one on the internet. I am sharing my personal experience for information purposes only. This post should not be taken as medical advice.

It was such a long road to get a diagnosis and I saw several doctors before finally getting answers. I know it can be difficult to find a local thyroid expert. Diet For Underactive Thyroid

I was already eating a healthy diet before finding out about my thyroid problems, so diet was not the entire problem for me. However here are some additional dietary changes that can help support thyroid health:

  • Avoid inflammatory foods. This can include sweeteners, processed foods, grains, soy, and dairy, but it can also include anything youre sensitive to.
  • Focus on eating quality meats and fish. Grass-fed and wild-caught meats and seafood have better nutrient profiles and dont contain possible inflammatory problems like antibiotics or mycotoxins.
  • Eat lots of green leafy vegetables cooked in coconut oil. Vegetables are rich in thyroid-friendly nutrients and fiber, which can help with constipation caused by hypothyroidism.
  • Eat fruits too, but focus on lower-glycemic ones . This is especially important if you have high glucose or insulin.
  • Drink bone broth a few times a day. It is rich in gut-healing nutrients, including collagen and gelatin.
  • Dont go low-carb to try to force weight loss. While you want to avoid high-starch carbs or those that are sugary, your thyroid needs the right kind of carbohydrates to make hormones.

Are Natural Treatments Effective

8 Natural Cure For Thyroid Problems

Natural remedies can be effective for improving overall health and for treating subclinical thyroid problems. For people with mild thyroid conditions, going natural may have an advantage over prescription medication in that natural treatments typically have fewer side effects. For people taking thyroid medication, herbal treatments and dietary changes should be approved by a doctor because combining different forms of treatments can create unwanted side effects.

Generally, a healthier diet can lead to better health and make treatment with Tapazole , desiccated thyroid, or Synthroid more effective. How Izabella And Her Team Are Treating Thyroid Problems

Ari Whitten: Interesting. So thats a conventional approach. How does that differ from the way that you would analyze those test results and the kinds of things you would think to do, once you get those test results?

Dr. Izabella Wentz: Right, so if I saw somebody with an elevated TSH, I would for sure recommend that they get on thyroid hormones right away to address the imbalance and deficiency in their body. Oftentimes, I would generally recommend natural desiccated thyroid hormones or a combination of t4-t3 or even glandulars in some cases, depending on the person and what their numbers were, and how they tolerated various interventions.

The standard of care is levothyroxine and this is t4, and this doesnt always turn into the active thyroid hormone inside the body known as t3, and so with a natural desiccated thyroid and combination meds have both of those, as do glandulars.

And so thats where I would usually think about, Okay, lets make sure if this person has an elevated TSH. Lets make sure they have enough thyroid hormone on board, and that will help them start feeling better right away

Giving people a high dose of nutrients that usually wakes them up and get things moving for them and often times targeted herbs and protocols. We can get into detail if you want.

4. Test for more than just TSH. TSH is a pituitary hormone, not a thyroid hormone, so you have to check your thyroid hormones to know whats really going on.

Ari Whitten: Yeah for sure. Let me see, youve worked with over a thousand people with Hashimotos and I know that you figured out that you can accelerate healing and symptom reduction within one to two weeks. Even for people who have been suffering for many, many years. So, how do you actually do that?

Dr. Izabella Wentz: One of the things that I started doing with my clients when I first got my health back and it didnt take two weeks to get my health back, right is, I started trying to figure out what the root causes were, and I was doing a lot of functional medicine testing, and kind of doing the dig-add-on approach, where we were going through, and checking off boxes. In some cases of this, turned out to be expensive, labor intensive, and we werent always seeing results right up front

I also have the sub sort of clients who was sensitive to everything. I would say, Hey, try this D vitamin and theyd be like It was horrible. I felt horrible and they were just these people that react to their environment. They reacted to supplement, everything around them was was just troublesome, and so I started thinking about, Okay, how do I help these people? These are things like, how do I do it faster and in a more efficient way? These are the thoughts I have in my head all the time.

Underactive Thyroid Treatment With Herbs And Nutrients

Herbs such as Coleus Forskolli have been proven to increase weight loss rates in people with low thyroid function. Herbs such as echinacea and hemidesmus are used to regulate the immune antibodies which are involved in destroying the thyroid if Hashimotos Thyroiditis is present. Many foods help increase thyroid funtion, such as foods high in Iodine and Tyrosine, which are the nutrients which thyroid hormones are synthesised from. There is recent research that some autoimmune thyroid conditions can be linked to food allergies, so it is very important for your naturopath to check for any possible allergies which can overload your immune system, making it harder for your thyroid to function well.

Our Naturopaths can help you with natural treatments for hypothyroidism and provide you with thorough thyroid testing.

What Does The Thyroid Do

As you can see, symptoms of hypothyroidism are extensive! They seem to affect every area of life, from energy levels to weight to digestion to hair, skin, and beyond.

How can the thyroid have this much power? A small gland that sits at the base of your neck, the thyroid is shaped like a butterfly. Its an endocrine gland, meaning that it produces hormones.

The thyroid makes two hormones: T4 and T3. The first, T4, is the inactive form that gets converted into active form as needed. T3 is the active form of the hormone that is produced in smaller amounts. You need both to have a well-functioning thyroid gland. TSH, short for thyroid-stimulating hormone, is produced by the pituitary gland and is in charge of telling the thyroid when to make more T3 and T4.

Low thyroid hormones can be caused in a few ways. Sometimes the pituitary gland doesnt make enough TSH, and the thyroid doesnt get the memo to make more. Other times, TSH levels are very high, and the thyroid is making T4, but your body isnt able to convert it into T3. Finally, theres another thyroid hormone known as Reverse T3, and in situations of stress, the body takes your T4 and dumps it into Reverse T3, resulting in plenty of thyroid hormone in the body that it just cant access for energy.
