Nature Throid And Wp Thyroid Availability In 2023

Np thyroid: Should you use this thyroid medication? (5 things to know)

Will Nature Throid be available in 2023? It is hard to say right now but a good guess is that it will not be available at least at the beginning of the year. All lots are currently not in production per the RLC Labs website and there is no indication that the company is going to restart production anytime soon. Until it does become available, RLC Labs is selling Thyroid USP to compounding pharmacies like National Pharmacy so patients can continue their treatment.

Why Levothyroxine May Not Adequately Treat Your Hypothyroidism

Pin on Thyroid Health

Many hypothyroid patients do not feel well on Levothyroxine and continue to experience the symptoms of underactive thyroid. Why? Levothyroxine contains only T4 which has to convert to T3 inside the body to be effective. As mentioned above, the conversion of T4 to T3 is interrupted by Hashimotos thyroiditis, stress, obesity, aging, diabetes, nutritional issues, beta-blockers and steroids. Thats why many patients do not have optimal levels of T3 in their body and continue to suffer from hypothyroidism.

How Should I Take Desiccated Thyroid

Follow all directions on your prescription label. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results. Do not use NP Thyroid in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended.

While using desiccated thyroid, you may need frequent blood tests.

Keep using this medicine as directed, even if you feel well. You may need to take thyroid medication for the rest of your life.

If you need surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are using desiccated thyroid. You may need to stop using the medicine for a short time.

Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

It Is An Ndt Formulation

The first thing you should know is that NP thyroid is an NDT formulation.

NDT, as I mentioned earlier, stands for natural desiccated thyroid and refers to an entire GROUP or CLASS of medications.

Medications that fall into this group are all created in the same basic way.

They all contain similar active ingredients but they differ in their INACTIVE ingredients.

These inactive ingredients, as you will soon find out, can make all of the difference for certain people.

We dont want to forget about the active ingredients, however, because they are also important .

So what is NDT?

NDT is a way of creating medication from certain animals .

It is created by taking thyroid glands from pigs and drying them up and then desiccating them and then standardizing the HORMONE content in each grain.

This is then formulated into a tablet which is then provided to you as the patient from a pharmacy.

Each grain of NDT contains the same active ingredients of T4 and T3 .

But NDT also contains additional ingredients which are VERY beneficial.

These additional ingredients include calcitonin , T1 thyroid hormone, and T2 thyroid hormone.

These ingredients may not sound like much but they are actually a big deal.

No other thyroid medication contains these ingredients !

The medications you are probably aware of contain only ONE thyroid hormone which is T4.

This is what separates NDT brands and formulations from other thyroid medications .

Desiccated thyroid is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby, but your dose needs may be different during pregnancy. Tell your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medicine.

What Is Armour Thyroid

Armour Thyroid is a medication that has been used as a treatment for hypothyroidism for over a century. The active ingredient in Armour Thyroid is desiccated thyroid extract, which contains both thyroxine and triiodothyronine . In addition, Armour Thyroid also contains small amounts of thyroxines T2 and T1, as well as calcitonin and iodine.

These cofactors help to ensure that the thyroid hormone is properly metabolized and utilized by the body. Armour Thyroid is currently manufactured in the USA by AbbVie. It is available by prescription only and should be taken under the supervision of a healthcare professional.

Armour Thyroid comes in 8 different strengths:

The T4/t3 Thyroid Drug Controversy

As noted, the standard treatment for hypothyroidism is levothyroxine alone. The addition of T3 to the levothyroxine/T4-only treatmentor using DTEis controversial and the topic of ongoing research and discussion.

Once experts realized that T4 naturally converts to T3, there was a great deal of excitement about how modern levothyroxine was compared to DTE, which was considered old-fashioned. At that time, many healthcare providers switched patients over to the synthetic medication and never looked back.

Still, some of these patients complained after being switched to levothyroxine that their symptoms had worsened or couldnât be resolved. This led to a number of the healthcare providers who had previously prescribed DTE for their patients putting some of them back on it.

DTE is prescribed far less often than levothyroxine. But frustrated patients who donât feel well who are doing their research and talking to other people. As a result, theyâre becoming increasingly aware that there are options beyond levothyroxine and that some people feel better on DTE.

Q: My Pharmacy Said Wp Thyroid Or Nature

NP THYROID® (THYROID TABLETS, USP) 15 MG

A: Neither Nature-Throid nor WP Thyroid are discontinued, but we are currently working out of a backorder. Click here to see a list of strengths that are currently in production. If you are having trouble getting your prescription from your usual pharmacy, we recommend contacting some other local pharmacies, or any of the mail-order pharmacies listed on our website.

What about the difference between NP thyroid and levothyroxine or Synthroid?

Is NP thyroid better?

And I think the best, and easiest, way to say this is

Most likely, yes, and probably.

A bit ambiguous, I know, but the truth is that MOST patients who switch to NP thyroid from levothyroxine will probably prefer this medication over what they were previously using.

How can I make such a statement?

Well, I have my own personal experience to draw from but I also have research studies to draw from as well.

From these studies , we know that approximately 50% of people who switch from levothyroxine to DTE prefer the DTE or thyroid extract.

This doesnt GUARANTEE that it will happen to you, after all, there are about 50% of patients didnt notice a difference.

But I would argue that doses being equal, you will most likely do better on NP thyroid over levothyroxine.

And the reason is simple:

As I mentioned earlier, NP thyroid contains BOTH active thyroid hormones as well as minor amounts of the lesser active thyroid hormones T1 and T2.

Thats why I said that all things being equal you will probably prefer NP thyroid.

The American Thyroid Association’s Opposition To Natural Desiccated Thyroid

Most endocrinologists take their direction from the ATA, which maintains that the guidelines and recommendation for levothyroxine and against NDT and combination T4/T3 therapy are evidence-based. There are, however, some disputable or questionable elements in their claims about NDT. On the ATA’s information page on thyroid hormone treatment, they make the following statements , to which I’ve offered my rebuttal:

While the unquestioned “superiority” of levothyroxine compared to “old-fashioned” NDT drugs has become accepted dogma in the endocrinology community, it’s clear that the research does not support it. This raises a question: Are the ATA’s “evidence-based” guidelines being unfairly influenced? Given what we know about the influence of drug companies, it’s a valid question.

The ATA panels that create guidelines are supposed to operate without bias. At the same time, the ATA itself, as well as panel members, are frequent recipients of grants, funding, and financial support from drug companies whose products they are in a position to recommend. In fact, according to the 2016 ATA annual report, pharmaceutical company Abbvie, – manufacturer of the Synthroid brand of levothyroxine – is one of the ATA’s top corporate donors. No manufacturers of NDT are major donors to the ATA or funding sources for its guidelines panel members.

Np Thyroid Reviews And Rankings

Doesnt even deserve a 0. If you are considering taking NP thyroid, I urge you to reconsider. It is not a TERRIBLE choice. The quality of NP Thyroid has deteriorated since the fall of 2019 and there has been no improvement since then.

This product is being recalled frequently. Recently, in late April 2021, it was recalled for having a lower potency than usual. Can you please search for it? You have been warned! Acella cant get it right and its not a reliable option. Go with the brand name Armor Thyroid instead or get a prescription for two synthetics along with T3 to achieve hormonal balance. If Nature-Throid or WP Thyroid is back on the market, try one of these.

Active And Inactive Ingredients

What happened to NP Thyroid? Why it was recalled

NP Thyroid contains the same Thyroid USP active ingredient as all other natural desiccated thyroid brands. Thyroid USP is also the same active ingredient found in compounded natural thyroid. NP Thyroid has inactive ingredients that include calcium stearate, dextrose, and mineral oil. It is manufactured in tablets at a large scale, so measures need to be taken to ensure that the product is stable and reaches patients unaltered. Calcium stearate is a type of calcium that helps the tablets release from the mold they are made in. Dextrose is a simple sugar that helps counteract the distinct taste of the natural thyroid. Mineral oil can have several possible applications that it may be used for in this product.

Types Of Thyroid Hormone Replacement Treatments

There are two types of thyroid replacement medicines. These medicines are available by prescription only.

The first type of therapy is synthetic medicine containing only levothyroxine. FDA-approved levothyroxine is available from several manufacturers.

The second type of therapy is made from dried ground thyroid glands from pigs. This is called desiccated thyroid extract , which is sold in the United States as Armour Thyroid, NP Thyroid, Nature-Throid, and Natural Thyroid, among other names.

Natural Vs Synthetic Thyroid Replacement Therapy

There are two main categories of thyroid replacement therapy:

  • Natural products, which are made from grinding up dried thyroid glands from animals
  • Synthetic products, which are made in a laboratory

Within each category, there are several different products available.

The natural products have been used as replacement therapy since the 1890s, even before the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and its regulations existed. Many years later, scientists learned how to create synthetic versions of T3 and T4.

One challenge with natural products has been the variability in their potency because the amount of hormone in an animal’s thyroid gland may vary. This has resulted in reports of failed response from too little thyroid hormone or side effects from too much thyroid hormone, as well as drug recalls of some natural products over the years.

As a result of the difficulties with variability in potency and the availability of synthetic forms of thyroid hormone, the natural thyroid products fell out of favor in the 1980s, but they may still be prescribed today and benefit some patients.

None of the current natural thyroid products on the market are approved by the FDA.
