Why Is Armour Thyroid Not Recommended
Armour Thyroid is a prescription medication that is available only through your healthcare provider. This medication may have side effects, such as increased appetite, hair loss, or headaches. If you experience any of these effects, contact your healthcare provider immediately. The medication is also expensive and must be taken for life.
Although natural and desiccated thyroid extracts have been around for decades, they have not undergone FDA approval. The lack of clinical studies has led many organizations to advise against their use during pregnancy. Because of this, Armour Thyroid is not recommended for pregnant women. It may cause thyrotoxicosis, which is a condition caused by excess thyroid hormones.
Armour Thyroid is a prescription medication that contains crushed thyroid glands from pigs. It also contains dextrose, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium starch glycolate, and opadry white. These ingredients are used in the manufacture of the pills to ensure that they have the proper consistency and appearance. The FDA has not approved Armour Thyroid as a treatment for hypothyroidism, and there are still concerns about its safety and efficacy.

Use A Compounding Pharmacy
At this time, it can be difficult to find porcine thyroid tablet brands in pharmacies due to shortages and recalls. Instead of using another porcine tablet brand, you may be able to get an alternative thyroid medication at a compounding pharmacy, a type of pharmacy that can mix and prepare prescription medications onsite. They may have porcine thyroid powder, which they can use to make a compounded thyroid medication that contains the same amounts of thyroid hormone found in Armour Thyroid. The compounded alternative may also come at a lower price than Armour Thyroid. Search the internet to look up compounding pharmacies in your area.
How Much Does Armour Thyroid Cost Without Insurance
Without insurance, the cash price of Armour Thyroid averages $47 for 30, 60 mg tablets. However, the out-of-pocket expense will depend on your plans formulary, the determined copay, whether youve met the deductible, and the dosage prescribed.
There are no generic versions of Armour Thyroid. If you dont have insurance coverage for Armour Thyroid, you may be able to switch to a different porcine thyroid tablet, such as NP Thyroid and Westhroid. Check with your healthcare provider before doing so.

C And Part D Coverage For Armour Thyroid
However, some Medicare Advantage plans provide coverage for Armour Thyroid. Medicare Advantage plans have to cover the same things that Original Medicare covers but will offer additional benefits as well. Exactly what a Part C plan covers and what the out-of-pocket costs are will vary depending on the specifics of your plan.
Medicare Part C plans that include prescription drug plans can provide coverage for medications, such as Armour Thyroid, that your healthcare provider will prescribe for you.
Some Medicare Part D plans may also provide coverage for Armour Thyroid. Part D is a prescription drug plan, and just like Part C, Part D plans are provided by private insurance companies.
However, most Part C and Part D plans do not provide coverage for Armour Thyroid.
If a Medicare Part C or Part D plan provides coverage for Armour Thyroid, it will be considered either as Tier 3 or 4 medication. Most of the time, Tier 3 and 4 medications are preferred branded medications. Tier 3 medications are more expensive than Tier 1 and 2 medications. Tier 4 medications are more expensive than Tier 1, 2, and 3 medications.
Medicare Part D also provides coverage for other prescription medications for thyroid conditions. Though for others, such as NP Thyroid, Part C and D generally will not cover the prescription.

Can You Drink Coffee With Armour Thyroid
Armour Thyroid is a crushed porcine thyroid derivative. It is commonly used by health enthusiasts as a weight loss supplement. However, there are some concerns about its safety and the potential for cardiovascular effects. It may interact with other medications. It is not recommended for self-administered use.
In one study, a 32-year-old male presented with 20-minutes of chest pain, sweating, and shortness of breath. He was otherwise healthy and had no family history of cardiac events. He reported taking 120 mg of Armour Thyroid daily. However, his symptoms resolved quickly, and he was discharged two days later.
It is important to note that coffee can interfere with the absorption of thyroid medications. This is due to the fact that coffee contains caffeine, which increases intestinal motility. This causes the medicine to pass through the digestive tract very quickly, which is detrimental to the thyroids ability to produce hormones. Therefore, drinking coffee with Armour Thyroid is not recommended.
Trying Out Armour For Hypothyroidism:
Q. My doctor is cool with anything reasonable that I want to try. So when I asked for a scrip for Armour Thyroid instead of the levothyroxine Ive been taking for years, he agreed. I have been on Levoxyl ever since my thyroid was removed to treat Graves disease.
Im on Medicare and my insurance denied it because it is not FDA approved. Its inexpensive, so I paid cash for it, just $20.
My poor daughter, who has hypothyroidism due to Hashimotos, asked her endocrinologist and the reaction was swift. NO! I dont prescribe Armour to anyone I care about. Tell your mother not to take it.
Im taking it anyway, and in another six weeks Ill be getting labs done. If its working, great. If not, I return to Levoxyl. I havent noticed any difference, but Ill go with the bloodwork.
Are you aware the FDA has not approved this? Apparently, its some kind of control over how much of each hormone the pill contains.

Did U No Medicare Is Removing Armour Thyroid From Formulary
Question posted by meyati on 9 Nov 2012
Starting New Years Day, Medicare is removing Armour thyroid extract for hypothyroid from its pharmaceutical formulary of approved medications. I received the notice today. My HMO won’t cover the cost of my Armour thyroid now. What makes it ridiculousness is that I called some pharmacies about the approved thyroid and was told that there’s a shortage of some of them-back ordered. It appears the new new thyroid hormone replacements have T 4 in them and are lacking T 3. I’ve been reading articles and comments on how many people don’t seem to have the ability to break T 4 down into T 3. These people just don’t feel well-still gain weight-lose hair.
Hi pmwilson: I called my pharmacy as soon as I read your comment about Nature-Throid. They told me they didn’t have any in stock, and had it back ordered for a while now, but can’t seem to get it for now! Great! You have to do what you think will work for you. I also have Hashimoto’s.I called the naturopath that I used to go to and discussed it with her. I am going to wean off my Nature-Throid and go back to the thyroid supplements I used to take years ago before getting put on Synthroid by an endocrinologist. I did not do well on Synthroid either. I am not recommending that you do what I am doing. I will come back and post again and let you know how it is going for me. I just get tired of dealing with the side effects that come from prescription medications.
Thank you! I will look into that!

Which Is Better Armour Thyroid Or Synthroid
Armour Thyroid and Synthroid both contain synthetic T4, which the body converts into T3. Both medications are available as pills in a variety of dosages. The difference between the two is that Synthroid contains liothyronine, while Armour Thyroid contains levothyroxine.
Armour Thyroid is made from desiccated thyroid glands taken from pigs, while Synthroid is synthetically synthesized from dried animal glands. Both contain T3 and T4, though the ratio of T4 is not the same as that of a healthy human thyroid gland.
Synthroid produces more consistent levels of T4 and T3, while Armour Thyroid is slightly less likely to cause side effects. Both drugs work well for many people, but some patients may experience side effects that make them less comfortable with them. For this reason, people suffering from hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism should consult with an endocrinologist before taking either drug.
