Since thyroid hormone occurs naturally in the body, almost anyone can take desiccated thyroid. However, you may not be able to use this medication if you have a thyroid disorder called thyrotoxicosis, or an adrenal gland problem that is not controlled by treatment.

To make sure desiccated thyroid is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:

• heart disease, angina

• any type of diabetes or

• problems with your adrenal gland.

Desiccated thyroid is not expected to be harmful to an unborn baby, but your dose needs may be different during pregnancy. Tell your doctor if you become pregnant while taking this medicine.

Small amounts of desiccated thyroid can pass into breast milk, but this is not expected to harm a nursing baby. However, do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

What Is Desiccated Thyroid

Desiccated thyroid is a combination of hormones that are normally produced by your thyroid gland to regulate the body’s energy and metabolism. Desiccated thyroid is given when the thyroid does not produce enough of this hormone on its own.

Desiccated thyroid treats hypothyroidism . Desiccated thyroid is also used to treat or prevent goiter , and is also given as part of a medical tests for thyroid disorders.

Desiccated thyroid should not be used to treat obesity or weight problems.

To better understand the differences in these available thyroid medications, we need to briefly talk about a few of the thyroid hormones we have in our body. The three hormones Ill primarily talk about in this article are T3, T4, and TSH.

Triiodothyronine is our primary biologically active thyroid hormone. About 20 percent of our T3 hormone comes from thyroid secretion directly, while the remaining 80 percent is produced when Thyroxine is naturally converted to T3 within our bodies. While T4 is 300 percent less biologically active than T3, it is critical to our bodys ability to produce adequate and healthy levels of the needed T3.

It is the low levels of T3 and T4 that signal the release of thyroid stimulating hormone . When TSH remains too high, we know we have hypothyroidism, and that is the conventional measure that many doctors solely look at.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, continued high levels of circulating T3 and T4 stop the release of TSH. When TSH remains too low, we suspect a hyperthyroid problem.

In people with normal thyroid function, TSH levels still often fluctuate .

Most conventional doctors will prescribe synthetic T4 medications, so many people are only familiar with T4-containing thyroid medications tablets such as levothyroxine , Synthroid®, Levoxyl®.

Adverse Reactions And Medication Ineffectiveness Due To Fillers

I have found that some of my clients experience sensitivities and adverse reactions to the many inactive ingredients or fillers found in their T4 medications. These are added as bulking agents used to stabilize the tablets, as coloring agents, as preservatives, or to aid in the manufacturing process in some way. Many have been shown to potentially cause adverse reactions, as well as affect the absorption rate and effectiveness of the very medication meant to help the thyroid.

Most generic levothyroxine products contain lactose and not all are gluten-free .

Can small amounts of these types of fillers really be problematic? Yes! Many people with Hashimotos have sensitivities to these ingredients no matter how small the exposure. In my 2015 survey of 2,232 readers, 57 percent of respondents said they reacted to or avoided all dairy, and over 75 percent avoided gluten due to sensitivities and reactions. Why Won’t Some Doctors Support Thyroid Treatment With Ndt

The T4/T3 Issue

Your body needs two primary thyroid hormones made by your thyroid gland: T4 and T3 . T4 is a storage hormone whose only role is to convert into T3âthe active hormone used by cells and tissues in your body.

The typical daily T3 requirement in a 150-pound healthy adult is around 30 mcg. A healthy thyroid gland itself produces about 5 mcg of that T3. The remaining 25 mcg of T3 needs to be made by T4 to T3 conversion. Mainstream endocrinology believes that if you take adequate dosage of only synthetic T4 , enough of that T4 will convert into T3 to meet your daily needs. â

Since the introduction of levothyroxine, some patients have anecdotally reported much better symptom relief and management of their hypothyroidism by taking NDT vs. levothyroxine. The likely reason? NDT contains natural forms of both T4 and T3 hormones.

Experts are beginning to understand thatâfor reasons that include nutritional status, stress, and other hormonal imbalancesâsome patients don’t convert T4 to T3 as well as thought. More recently, research has shown that a subset of the population has a genetic defect that impairs the ability to convert T4 into T3. Many of these patients report far better symptom relief and quality of life taking NDT because it includes T3 and doesn’t rely solely on conversion.

Still, some doctors believe that measuring T3 levels and treating low-normal or low T3 is unnecessary or unbeneficial. They prefer not to treat patients with NDT drugs.

Switching From Armour Thyroid To Np Thyroid

I’ve been taking Armour thyroid for years, but it’s becoming increasingly expensive.

I had to switch from NP to Armour a couple years ago for a couple reasons.

Should I consider switching to Synthroid instead?

I haven’t done this but it wasn’t for lack of trying. It took a few years to even find a Dr. willing to consider NDT. I had read about NP but at the time, it was in the middle of their huge recall and couldn’t be found anywhere.

I’m with a new Dr. now and have discussed Armour/Synthroid with her. I’m sort of considering testing Levo again next year and adding Cytomel if needed. It’s been quite a few years since prior Dr. stopped my Armour and changed it to Levo – and said nothing about Cytomel. It wasn’t pretty!
