I generally recommend avoiding supplementation in specific nutrients like iodine, zinc, and selenium unless directed by a healthcare professional, says Morey. Supplements contain large amounts of these minerals, and consuming too much of them can lead to gastrointestinal problems in mild cases and more serious problems, such as deficiency in other nutrients and heart and kidney failure, in extreme cases.

But you might want to consider asking your doctor about a multivitamin, says Wattenbarger, especially if you know you dont have the best diet or if youre on a vegan diet that is likely to be coming up short on key nutrients.
